UN Human Rights Council Sessions

  • UN Human Rights Council session 39 convenes in Geneva from 10-28 September 2018. The Council will receive reports from several special procedure mandate holders including the Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, Commissions of Inquiry for Syria, Burundi, and South Sudan, the Myanmar Fact Finding Mission, and the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous People. Member states will also participate in an interactive dialogue with the Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights on reprisals against human rights defenders, a panel discussion on the rights of indigenous peoples, and a discussion on the integration of a gender perspective. Following the US departure from the Council, Iceland was elected to the remainder of the term and will be participating in the 39th session. In consultations outside the session, reform efforts regarding the Human Rights Council continue, largely on technical issues such as biennialization of resolutions and other ‘improvements.’
