UN Human Rights Council Sessions


  • UN Human Rights Council session 40 convenes in Geneva from 25 February to 22 March 2019. The Council will consider the renewal of several special procedure country mandates including the Special Rapporteurs on the situation of human rights in Iran, North Korea, Myanmar, and the special Commissions on Syria and South Sudan. The mandate for the Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights is also up for renewal. The Council is expected to adopt resolutions on freedom of religion and on combatting religious intolerance. Five annual resolutions on Israel are expected as well as reports on the database of business enterprises engaged in Israeli settlements in the Palestinian occupied territories. and from the Commission of Inquiry on the 2018 violence in Gaza. The Council will take up a report on human rights in Sri Lanka and likely adopt resolutions calling for the Office of the High Commissioner for human Rights to continue monitoring and reporting on those situations. Reports will be presented by the Special Rapporteurs on human rights defenders and freedom of religion or belief. In addition, the High Commissioner for Human Rights will deliver her annual report to the Council and a report on North Korea. Member states will also participate in the annual meeting on the rights of the child and debate on the rights of persons with disabilities.
